Frequently Asked Questions
Do you take my insurance?
I am currently in-network with the following insurance providers:
Aetna (NC)
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC)
Cigna (NC)
Carelon Behavioral Health
Quest Behavioral Health
Please note that due to licensing regulations you must be physically located in North Carolina for our sessions. This is required even for private-pay clients.
Who do you see exactly? What kind of problems can you help with?
I see adults (18+) experiencing a wide range of problems including anxiety, stress, depression, mood disorders, trauma / PTSD, relationship / family / interpersonal problems, personality disorders, and difficult life transitions. If for any reason I’m not a clinically appropriate fit, I’ll refer you to another service provider or a different level of care.
Where did you go to school and what are your credentials?
I’m a double Tar Heel with a Master of Social Work (MSW) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and am bound as a psychotherapist to the Code of Ethics from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).
What is an LCSW? Is it the same as a counselor or psychologist?
LCSW stands for “Licensed Clinical Social Worker.” Clinical social workers are actually the largest group of mental health service providers in the country according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Some other common mental health credentials include Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), and Psychologist (PhD or PsyD). All of these professionals can provide licensed, ethical psychotherapy. It’s usually best to focus on an individual therapist’s approach and relational fit as opposed to credentials.
Will our sessions be confidential?
Yes - our sessions will be confidential in accordance with HIPAA rules and the NASW Code of Ethics. There are very few exceptions to confidentiality related to imminent safety which we will discuss in our first session. Some general guidelines on confidentiality can be found here, but it’s important to talk through these up front.
How does virtual therapy / telehealth work exactly?
Our sessions will be remote via a HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform (similar to Zoom, Google Meet, etc.). We’ll be able to see and hear each other, as well as screenshare if necessary. It’s important for you to have a private space where you can expect confidentiality and a solid internet connection.
What does therapy look like? What can I expect?
I believe in using evidence-based practices in my therapeutic work. If something isn’t evidence-based, then it may not be effective or ethical. My interventions primarily come from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). Each of these modalities relies heavily on the concept of mindfulness and the important connections between our thoughts, our emotions, and our behaviors.
